The strongest solar storm on record occurred in 1859 during a below-average cycle.

Typically stronger solar storms accompany above-average sunspot cycles.  This was quite the exception.

The 1859 storm shorted out telegraph wires, causing fires in North America and Europe and sent readings of Earth’s magnetic field through the roof.

But, it produced northern lights so bright that people read newspapers by their light!
