PSK31 Calling Frequencies

While in theory a ham could be using PSK31 as their mode of transmission anywhere that “RTTY and DATA” are permitted, there are specific frequencies where PSK31 tends to be used. Here’s a list as I’ve been able to compile it:

160 Meters 1.838 MHz
80 Meters 3.580 MHz
40 Meters 7.070 MHz
30 Meters 10.140 MHz
20 Meters 14.070 MHz
17 Meters 18.100 MHz
15 Meters 21.070 MHz
12 Meters 24.920 MHz
10 Meters 28.120 MHz
6 Meters 50.290 MHz

It’s been my experience as of this writing that all one has to do is tune to whichever of these frequencies that has PSK31 activity on it, park the rig there and stay there! When signals are present, and there are lots of times several, you need only select which one to copy or QSO with by clicking on it in your software waterfall display.

PSK31 only takes up 31 Hz of bandwidth, so within the 3000 Hz that your receiver is likely receiving (less if you’re using a SSB filter), there is room for many simultaneous QSOs. Lots of times, they are there, too.

      Hey Jerry!

      You don’t need an Elmer, but having one would certainly help to speed things up for you. You’re welcome to ask questions here or to me directly if needed.

      In the mean time, I recommend and as a couple of on-line resources that may help, as well as anything relevant from ARRL.

      I use a Signalink USB device to interface my computer to my radio, but I believe any of the other devices, such as the Rigblaster, work fine as well. To be honest, you don’t even need such interfaces…in most cases you can just run the appropriate audio cables from your rig (you may have to solder on the right connectors) to your PC’s sound card. It really doesn’t take much to get going on this.

      I use Ham Radio Deluxe/Digital Master 780 and sometimes fldigi as my psk software. They all work well and I can’t necessarily recommend one over the other. All I’ve seen suggests there’s no real big difference performance-wise. If you’re lucky enough to have a one, there are rigs that can code and decode psk31 directly.
